The environment we live in is about ecosystem. Ecosystem is an extremely subtle and complex system of interaction of all the elements of nature. In ideal conditions, if human beings didn’t exist or if they didn’t alter it, the ecosystem would maintain our planet in ideal condition – just the perfect place to live, where air, water and soil are absolutely clean. But the problem is that we do exist and that we do alter the ecosystem in the severe way. Even a minor alteration into nature causes a chainlike set of phenomena which lead to influencing the lives of all organisms. Taking into consideration the damage we make, we are very lucky to be able to normally live and function so far. We are the only living creatures on the planet Earth that do harm to the place we live – in spite of the fact that we are intellectually much more developed, animals don’t do harm to nature in any way. The problem is that most people don’t even realise the fact that they gradually destroy our planet with their own hands by simply disposing the waste products they produce in an inappropriate way.
Luckily there is a decision, and it is very simple and complicated at the same time. You have probably guessed by now that I am speaking about recycling. On our current stage of advancement we certainly won’t be able to refuse all the technologies and conveniences of our life in order to return to nature completely, and recycling is the thing that allows us to improve and preserve the environment we live in, as well as letting us enjoy our technology advancement in full. Most of the waste products we throw away can be used again and again for manufacturing high quality products. Paper, plastic, electronics, different types of metals and glass are just a few of the materials that can be successfully recycled. I am going to stop a bit more on recycling of glass, as it is much less discussed than say recycling of plastic.
Glass is used in production of numerous items we use daily. The process of recycling glass is very special. All the glass delivered to the recycling center must be thoroughly sorted into some categories – transparent, green, amber and other colours. The thing is that colours of glass differ according to the structure of glass that is why different colours of glass can’t be recycled together. Also different types of glass have different heat resistance, which must be also taken into consideration. Glass recycling will eliminate great amounts of landfills, save a lot of energy and raw material used for making glass, which can be preserved for the next generations.
