How Parents Can Practice Proper Skin Care

There is more to baby skin care than meets the eye. Keeping your baby’s skin clean and clear means taking care of his or her whole body. Newborn babies are very susceptible to skin conditions because it takes time for the skin to get used to life outside of the womb. Good baby skin care means making good decisions all day long. Pretty much everything your baby has contact with during the day will have an effect on your baby’s skin. Don’t worry too much though because practicing good skin care for your baby does not have to be difficult or complex. With just a little bit of common sense it can be really simple. Here are some hints that you can use to help you as you figure out your new routine.

Believe it or not, your newborn and young infant does not need to have a bath every night. Most of the time young infants and newborns stay pretty clean. They don’t get dirty because, for the most part, they are immoble and depend on Mom and Dad to get around. This makes it simple for parents to make sure that their babies don’t get dirty or do damage to their skin. When your baby is still a newborn, you only need to bathe your baby a couple of times a week as long as you keep his or her face clean. Once the baby can get around on her own, however, it is important to bathe her more often.

When you shop for baby skin care products read the ingredients carefully. You want to stay away from products that include phthalates, parabens, added fragrances and dyes. These are all ingredients that have been known to cause things like rashes and other skin conditions. You don’t want to ruin your skin care efforts by accidentally causing a rash or other condition to develop Choose skin care products that won’t irritate your baby’s skin. Consider asking your pediatrician for help if you aren’t sure which skin care products are best for your baby.

Your baby’s umbilical stump is fragile–be careful around it. Rubbing it, pulling on it and playing with it are bad ideas. Swab the stump with rubbing alcohol a few times a day. Besides this wash, leave it alone. Your level of care should be so high that you don’t even give the baby a real bath until after the stump has fallen off. Your newborn’s diaper should be folded down so that the top of it doesn’t scrape or rub on the umbilical cord. The stump is very sensitive so you want to make sure that it does not get irritated. Your pediatrician can advise you about how to best care for the spot that is left behind after the stump falls off. When you bring your first baby home, proper baby skin care will seem impossible. You might find yourself fighting the urge to bathe and clean the baby too often. Believe it or not, it isn’t very hard to keep your new baby clean. Soon you will realize that, for the most part, practicing proper baby skin care is mostly about common sense and keeping your baby clean and away from things that irritate his or her skin. Not to worry: you’ll learn eventually!
