The organic food market has grown at an extraordinary pace over the last five years and the growth is far from ending here. Thus, market studies indicate a potential doubling of the sales by 2011. Such statistics have in fact given a new direction to the growth of the organic food market as more and more food producers have taken up these lines of production trying to capitalize on them. Consumers, on the other hand, are determined to read ORGANIC on labels and thus stay away from the pesticides, the genetically modified organisms, the hormones and the antibiotics in conventional food.
The extension of the organic food market results from consumers learning that regular non-organic food is dangerous to health by the chemicals it contains. The more we learn about the additives and chemical substances in non-organic products, the higher the eagerness to buy something organic. In time, the exposure of the processed food risks will determine a whole new evolution direction of the organic food market. And people shop at supermarkets, which is why, retailers have to offer attractive products that are considered organic commodities at a very affordable price. Consequently, when you shop at Wal-Mart you want to get organic foods at a rather good price.
There are plenty of producers all over the world who service the organic food market. Export of organic products is not held in too high esteem although it represents an agreeable commercial practice. The emphasis and the responsibility at the same time falls on local producers, farmers or farming groups that address the needs of the local market sector. Efforts are presently being made to extend the organic food market by an increase of the production. This growth can only be possible if more and more manufacturers get caught in the system. Risks do come with the rapid development.
The conventional product sales will drop with the higher preponderance of organic foods and the development of the organic food market. The problem here is that even the regular items on the organic food market can become subject to the production haste that will involve some form of automated processing or food treatment, thus, pushing the all organic principles a bit further, making them rather loose in fact. Therefore, we could be witnessing a softening of the standards that keep organic foods so appealing to the health-concerned consumers. Regulations therefore have to remain strict and their implementation by control organs has to be impeccable.

The consume of organic meats is a very healthy choice for people who care about their personal well being and for the environment. The difference from industrial farms is that organic livestock gets grown in a significantly higher ethical manner, without causing deforestation and an incredible annual consume of grains. Consider the following advantages specific to organic meats.
No antibiotics, hormones or other artificial drugs are allowed for animals grown organically. Moreover, the foods such animals are fed on cannot be modified genetically according to the legal regulations. Organic meats therefore bring purer nutrients because of the food and the treatment that animals receive in farms. Plus, we can add here the significant safety of the products as compared to the factory produced counterparts.
For instance, studies indicate that the mad cow disease is closely connected with bovines being fed on the ground remains of their same species. The disease affects humans who consume contaminated meat, the same symptoms will also be present in the human form of the disease. Organic meats result from animals that are not fed on any form of ground up animal parts and therefore pose almost no risk of infestation.
The treatment of the animals is also important for the quality of organic foods. In factory farms, animals are confined to very small pens without the possibility to move and being crammed together permanently. Animals grown on organic farms are allowed to graze and range without too much confinement. This means that the organic meats produced on such farms have all the positive properties resulting from a natural fresh diet.
By eating organic meats you also encourage the environment protection and the reduction of pollution resulting from manure. Industrial farms represent some of the largest polluting agents; as for small farms, their advantage is that they use the manure for soil fertilization, thus allowing the substances to reenter the circuit.
You can buy all sorts of organic meats form organic stores and local farms. You can choose from chicken, pork, beef or veal that are not exposed to chemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers. The land on which the livestock is grown is safe from persistent chemical residues like dioxin, for instance, that passes into animal fat and then poisons the user. A good health seems closely connected with an organic diet!

Although most people have got used to buying most organic products from the hypermarket, one can always turn to an organic food store and find a wider and more comprehensive range of products. The truth is that such stores provide supplies and services locally, targeting customers in a limited geographical area. The advantages of purchasing products from an organic food store is that the quality of the products could be higher given the fact that most such facilities are either backed by an organic farm or have contracts with a regular organic food supplier. Plus, customers have the option of ordering products when they are no available, with the mention that there may be packaging and transportation fees.
Presently, you can search for an organic food store on the Internet; there are web sites that provide state maps with all the organic food stores and restaurants nearest to the customer. Then you can take your pick! Should you like to spread the word about a good organic food store, you can submit info on the facility in online directories for other people to access. The organic food store has a very productive counterpart in the farmers market, where you’ll find pretty much the same kind of food: healthy, chemical-free products that are certified as organic.
Most people go to an organic food store to buy fruit and vegetables. The idea here is to buy stuff that is produced or grown in the same region. Regional prosperity and local economic development will thus be boosted by the preference for the products supplied by small farms run in the family. Thus, not only will you enjoy good tasty and healthy food, but you’ll also support the efforts of striving farms to keep up with the market demands. There are many ways to advertise for such products. There are the Community Supported Agriculture, U-Pick Up farms and farm stands that function well in the system.
Dairy products, eggs and meat are more difficult to find in a regular organic food store, but this is not impossible. Lots of farmers provide the community with fresh products through the intermediary of such shops. And this makes a really great substitute for the food produced by the industrial farms where all sorts of hormones and antibiotics are used to grow livestock and produce eggs. Fortunately, the fact that people learn about non-organic food risks, has led consumers to choose an organic food store over a supermarket.

With the arrival of spring it is time to start thinking about starting seedlings for your garden. Many gardeners say that germinating their own vegetable seeds and organic seeds is one of the most rewarding parts of gardening.
Nurturing a seed from a tiny kernel to a healthy plant is a slow, yet rewarding process. You may sow your seeds in a garden shed, on a warm and sunny windowsill or in a well-equipped greenhouse.
vegetable seeds
Wherever you choose to begin your rite of spring, the joy of watching nature in action is a rewarding experience. To be successful, just follow a few rules.
The first rule of thumb when you plant seeds is to practice good hygiene. Good hygiene you ask? It just means that you need to make sure you clean all of your pots and trays before sowing. They should be scrubbed clean with a biodegradable detergent in order to remove any traces of plant disease and prevent their spread into your new plantings.
Another important factor to consider is the growing medium you will use? There are a variety of soils available on the market, but as a general rule, any soil that is not too heavy, one that is water retentive and is high in nutritional value will suffice.
A seed is capable of germinating and growing up to the two-leaf stage. Moisture and warmth are the keys to unlocking the resources held inside the seed. Most seeds need light and will have different temperatures at which they will germinate.
flower seeds
As a rule, this will happen at between 59 degrees Fahrenheit to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Seed beds need to be moist but not overly wet. It is a personal choice as to whether you sow in trays, plugs or pots. There are a variety of soils available on the market, but as a general rule, any soil that is not too heavy, one that is water retentive and is high in nutritional value will suffice.
It’s time to pot the seedlings when they emerge and grow past the two-leaf stage. There are many ready-bagged types of potting compost available, but typically a mix of three parts organic compost, one part coir (the shredded husk of the coconut) and one part worm castings is the best medium to use. This is a great way of turning kitchen waste into nutrient rich, soil composts.
Put the mixture into your pots and prepare it by indenting holes for your seedlings. You should gently and sparingly water your seedling once it has been placed into the pot. As your new seedlings grow, brush your hand over them occasionally. This simulates the wind blowing and actually stimulates root growth.
planting flowers
It is always a good thing to experiment with new soil mixtures and planting environments when planting your seeds. At times it may seem tedious, but in the end the surprising results are worthwhile.
Don’t be intimidated by seeds and garden planting alongside your vegetables. By doing this, you add your own special touch to your garden.

Many companies have increased sales with the higher demand for natural organic products, in fact the shopper is much more aware what he/she buys and makes the selection more rigorously. Natural organic products speak of better health and higher quality thanks to the pure natural ingredients. Presently, vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy products have labels with the organic certification to inform the shopper on their validity. In fact, lots of supermarket chains have special contracts with exclusive suppliers of natural organic products, and this influences positively the price policy applied.
The dissemination of information: this is another criterion to extend the use of natural organic products. People want to be informed and need all sorts of materials to learn about the benefits to go organic. Market studies indicate that there is quite a number of people who do not know how to shop for natural organic products because of this very improper access to information. The advantages of organic foods represent the elements that influence a smart purchase. Thus, the fact that organic food means more food than conventional items should be enough to convince one to buy organic. Thus, there are more vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and healthier proteins.
There are other specifics closely related with the purchase of natural organic products. When organic food is favored, there are more benefits than you can suspect: there will be a lot less stress on the environment, for instance. This is the explanation why so many green life supporters focus on the organic side of food and ban anything that has been highly processed, fertilized or treated with insecticides. With the emphasis on natural organic products we may wonder on the possible evolution of the food market in the coming years.
Will natural organic products stick to a high quality level? Will there be a corruption at the heart of the system and even organic items will undergo some processing? Will regular crops disappear? Predictions can be made, but the truth is that we are writing the future ourselves. It is easy to understand why with the higher organic food demand, many regular food producers will switch to the new conditions. However, the risk of this adjustment is the potential deterioration of the high quality of the natural organic products. It therefore remains to be seen which will win the battle of regular vs. organic.

You are expecting a new addition to your folks, a newborn — congratulations. Babies need so many things. You will need to get a room ready for the baby, and you may definitely need to buy baby furniture - most importantly the baby bed, the all important crib. And donot forget, along with the crib come accessories such as the mattress, blankets, sheets and the bumper pads.
There are many different sorts of crib available ; they come in several designs, different styles and different costs. Safety is the most important thing when purchasing a crib. The U.S. Presidency has a collection of standards and guidelines for crib makers. However, when you are assembling the crib you might still find problems which make the crib unsafe like loose slats or missing pieces.
As well as making sure the crib you are buying is safe, there are other features that are vital such as :
Adjustable mattress height. This feature will permit the parents to adjust the height of mattress as the baby grows. Adjusting the mattress height prevents the child from incidentally falling out of the crib.
Simplicity of release of the drop side. You’re looking for ease of release and how much noise it makes. Remember you may be up at all hours of the night and sleep deprived, so simplicity of release on the drop side of the crib is an important feature to keep in mind. Also you would like the drop side of the crib to rise and fall silently, especially rise, because when you put your sleeping baby in the crib you donot would like them to reawaken instantly.
Mattress. The mattress should fit the crib completely and comfortably. Ensure there isnot any room between the bed and the mattress where a baby could be caught. Finding a mattress that fits this criteria is often not tough because new cribs and crib mattresses come in standard sizes. Baby Cribs
Some people prefer to use a crib that has been in the family for generations rather than a new one. That’s fine, but the crib should bear compete inspection to be certain it is safe. This crib has been in the family for generations and so far no baby has ever gotten hurt in this crib, but you need to be sure your baby isn’t the first baby to be injured in this crib either. Baby Furniture Cribs
Since this crib has been used several times in the past, taken apart and stored when not required, when it is rebuilt you could find that some of the slats are loose, the crib is wobbly when you shake it, or some of the screws are missing. There could be chips, hard edges, cracked or peeling paint. Today’s crib mattresses might not fit in the right way. These are all things that make the crib unsafe for your baby, and while it is a nice sentiment to use a crib that’s a family heirloom but safety if more significant. Baby Furniture Cribs

I’m not sure what it’s like in your country of origin, but here where I live, I’m deeply concerned about the lack of environmental education being taught in our schools. As a father, an individual, a community member and a concerned global citizen, I believe it’s extremely important for our education to be responsible and relevant in the 21st century.
Just like in past generations, values, principles, behavior, goals and priorities will change as a way of life, it has to, and our education needs to not only follow, but where possible, also lead these changes. The challenge is not related to questioning whether environmental education is essential, but which kind of environmental education is important, in order to initiate a change of values and behaviors. Undoubtedly, if you’re a regular on EarthHuddle.com, you too are concerned about the social, economic and environmental changes currently sweeping our planet and the urgent action required for change.
When I was attending school about twenty five years ago, I was questioning the content, the relevance, and adaptation of my education. Today, as a wiser individual in a constantly changing world, my questions and concerns back then have been justified. It is my opinion that the modern ‘curriculum’ has changed little in this time despite the huge changes witnessed in so many other areas. Twenty five years later and a hugely different world, with a whole set of new values, challenges and opportunities, it’s definitely time for a change in education. It’s time to properly introduce environmental education to our future generation.
The aim of environmental education should be to create a global population that is aware of, and concerned about, the environment and human impact on the environment. We must acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, motivations, and commitment to work individually and collectively toward solutions of current problems and the prevention of new ones. Environmental education is also about bridging social borders. It is an essential endeavor for the re-evaluation of present-day society, thereby helping us in the transition to a sustainable society.
Environmental education is, in most cases, a non-mandatory component of schools and, as a result, struggles for acceptance in mainstream formal and teacher education. ‘Alternative’ schooling such as Waldorf and Montessori could be considered a slight exception. Because environmental education is multi-disciplinary, it is difficult for teachers to work it into their narrowly-defined lesson plans. The framework for environmental education is in some ways radical, ambitious and transformative.
Environmental education, however, is the foundation for creating the green workforce of the new economy. It is for men, women and children of all cultures, including those for whom English is not the native language. It should not be restricted to in-class lesson plans for it is often taught or enhanced through outdoor experiences.
Environmental education is also good for student academic performance, and hands-on environmental education connects children with nature. Experience in environmental education is an asset and should be strongly encouraged.
The true aim of any environmental education is not only to raise kids with a healthy respect for the environment, but to help create a generation of leaders who will identify new ways to live in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.

The subject of sustainable building is a hard one. There is often the concept that the modern home must be made of brick or have aluminum siding, and that the home must come with a white, picket fence. However, as more and more people grow concerned about the lasting value of the planet, sustainable building has become quite popular.
What makes a sustainable building? First and foremost, the building does not use materials that are required for endangered species. It does not consume a great deal of energy. It is built in such a way where it is naturally cool in the summer and warm in the winter, so that heating and cooling costs are significantly lowered. It is built with sustainable building materials. A sustainable building project does not destroy the land that it is built upon, but is more in harmony with it.
This is very difficult to achieve. Most people will not be able to own a sustainable building anytime soon. However, there are steps that you can take to make your home a more sustainable building. The first step is to replace your appliances and insulate your home. Insulation helps keep your home warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. Energy-star appliances consume a great deal less energy. This has two benefits. First, it lowers the amount of power that is required from the power grid. This means that the power grids have to support less energy. A power grid that needs to create less energy does less damage to the environment. Second, the less energy demands you make, the cheaper your monthly bills are. With economies that are fluctuating, this can make a huge difference month to month. In addition to this, a sustainable building will be biodegradable. No, this does not mean that your new home will crumble around your ears. What it does mean is that in two or three hundred years, should the property no longer be lived in and maintained, the sustainable building will degrade and be returned back to the environment, removing the footprint it once had. This is very important for those who wish to eliminate the amount of damage that they do to the environment.
Not all sustainable building projects will be biodegradable. Buildings made of pure stone from the lot will last a long time. By using the rock from the location of the house, quarries are not required. Quarries can leave quite a lot of damage to the environment, ranging from animal deaths as deer and other creatures fall from the cliffs, to chemicals pooling in water ponds in the quarry center. Abandoned quarries that flood out are also dangerous to children and adults, as there is often dead fall and abandoned equipment left in the quarry bottom.
A sustainable building design is only the first steps towards being environmentally friendly and leading a green lifestyle.
Timothy Greensland
